Although securing the investment of £35 million and fifty-two mines in Western Australia, was declared bankrupt, lost his Lord Mayor of Perth seat (the only capital city mayor omitted from the honours list on the opening of the Federal parliament) with his last appearance in the Legislative Council on 29 September 1903.
