During his time on Council he oversaw many major projects including Prospect and Broadview Ovals, widening Prospect Road, providing sewerage to Prospect, establishing parks and gardens and flood controls.

Charles Cane had a strong interest in recording the history of Prospect and there is a large collection of his material in the Prospect History Collection. His material was a significant source for the book on the history of Prospect produced by Max Lamshed for Prospect’s Centenary.

Cane Street and the Charles Cane Reserve are named for him.
