JW Cole was involved with a number of investment and building societies. Local buildings he designed include the New Temperance Hall for North Adelaide in 1855, St Clement's Church at Blair Athol, and the original Wesleyan Methodist Church at Sefton Park. He served for  three years as a member for Torrens in the House of Assembly
