Notes (points of interest etc.)

Extract from Chronicle 13 June 1946 –

50 years in the GPO

Mr. Oates started as a telegraph messenger in 1896, and soon became a clerk in the telegraph branch. For 50 years he has worked in the central office, and has served under Sir Charles Todd and all his successors. Last week his colleagues gave him a warm send-off, and the Deputy Director (Mr. F. W. Arnold), on their behalf, handed him a beautiful travelling rug.

Mr. Oates is fond of art, which he studied under the late Arthur Milbanke. He learnt the piano from Mr. E E. Mitchell, and singing from Mr. Edward Howard. He was widely known as conductor and pianist of the Rosemont Orchestra and Concert Party for 15 years.
